How do I draught proof the meeting rail?The meeting rail is where the top and bottom sashes meet, horizontally across the middle of the window. It's a question we're asked a lot, and this is the answer.

A white brush and twin-fin seal in a self-adhesive carrier. Route a small channel along the top of the bottom sash, peel and press it in, and it seals against the top sash when the window is closed.

Needs a routed channelYou'll route an 8mm × 3.5mm groove in the top of the bottom sash. It's really the only way to properly draught proof this part of the window.

How do I draught proof where the sashes meet?

A question we're asked a lot

The meeting rail is where the top and bottom sashes meet, running horizontally across the middle of the window. It's a common source of draughts and rattles, and people ask us a lot how to seal it.

This is the answer. It does mean routing a small channel in the top of the bottom sash, but it's really the only way to properly draught proof this part of the window.

Route a channel

Cut an 8mm wide, 3.5mm deep groove along the top of the bottom sash's meeting rail.

Peel and press it in

The carrier has a self-adhesive back and sits flush in the groove, with the brush and fin standing up.

Close the window

The brush and fin seal against the top sash where the two meet, closing the gap that lets draughts and rattles in.

Some people also like to route this strip into the window frame or the sashes. It's simply the way they prefer to do it.

Installation

Fitting it

You'll need a router. Call us if you'd like to talk it through first.

Route the groove

Use an 8mm straight router bit to cut a groove 3.5mm deep.

Clean it out

Make sure the groove is clean, dry and free of dust.

Peel and press

Cut to length, peel the backing and press the carrier firmly into the groove.

Fix the ends

Add a small dab of mitre glue or superglue at each end so the brush stays put over time.

Tip: keep paint off the brush so it stays soft and seals well.

Do I have to route a channel?

Yes. The carrier sits flush in an 8mm wide, 3.5mm deep groove. It's a small job with a router, and it's really the only way to properly draught proof the meeting rail. If you don't have a router, a local carpenter can do it quickly.

Where else can I use it?

Some people route it into the window frame or the sashes to seal the top, bottom or sides. It's simply the way some people prefer to do it. Call us if you'd like to talk it through.
