How to Repair a Rotten Timber Window Sill Using Epoxy

Rotten timber window sills are a common problem in Australian homes due to moisture, heat and exposure to the elements — but in most cases, the timber doesn't need replacing. Using the Evermend Timber Epoxy Repair system, you can restore damaged timber so it's strong, durable, and ready to paint.

What rotten timber looks like

Common signs of timber rot include soft wood, peeling paint, and dark or crumbling areas. If the damage is localised and the structure is still intact, the timber can usually be repaired rather than replaced.

Why timber rot happens in Australia

Timber rot occurs when moisture enters the wood and is trapped. Combined with heat and exposure, this leads to decay.

The step-by-step process

01

Remove all rotten timber

Use a chisel or screwdriver to remove all soft and decayed timber. Continue until only solid wood remains.

02

Check the timber moisture content

Before applying Evermend Timber Stabiliser, the timber must be dry — moisture content needs to be below 18%. If the timber is too wet, the epoxy system won't bond correctly and the repair may fail.

  • Use a moisture meter to check the timber
  • Ensure the reading is below 18%
  • If higher, allow the timber to dry fully before continuing
Don't skip this step: applying epoxy to damp timber is one of the most common causes of failure.
03

Apply Evermend Timber Stabiliser

Apply Evermend Timber Stabiliser to the exposed timber. This penetrates the fibres and hardens the remaining wood.

04

Rebuild with Evermend Epoxy Filler

Mix and apply Evermend Epoxy Timber Filler to rebuild the damaged section, shaping it to match the original profile. Two cure speeds are available: the 4 Hour Cure for deeper repairs, giving you 25–30 minutes of working time, or the 1 Hour Cure for smaller repairs where you want a faster set.

Mixing tip: mix the two parts on a mixing board, not in a container — use a folding action, folding the mixture over on top of itself, rather than stirring. Continue until a unified colour is achieved, with no streaks of either component visible.

05

Sand the repair smooth

Once cured, sand the repair flush with the surrounding timber until smooth.
